Destination Guide Graubunden, Switzerland

Graubunden, Switzerland

Find Accommodation in Graudunden
A diverse and fascinating region ...

Graubünden is the largest canton in Switzerland and is home to the ritzy ski resorts of St Moritz and Davos as well as the only national park in Switzerland. It is also the main area in which Romansch is spoken. Whether you visit Graubünden in summer or winter, you certainly will not be disappointed.

Graubünden covers an area of 7,106² metres and has its highest point of altitude at Piz Bernina (4,049 metres) and its lowest at Misox (270 metres). The massive difference in altitude explains the diverse climates of the region. Switzerland’s oldest town, Chur, is the cantonal capital and has a population of fewer than 33,000. Continuously inhabited since 3000 BC, the town is pretty and has many interesting features. Take a walk around the old town and marvel at the beautiful 16th century buildings and fountains. Visit the 800-year old cathedral or one of the many museums – history, art, natural, winemaking. Hop on the Rhaetian Railway and head off into the mountains for a day trip or longer. Head to the Swiss Grand Canyon located at the confluence of the Rhine in Reichenau. Have a go at river rafting on the 17-kilometre stretch of river between Ilanz and Reichenau. If that sounds too energetic, take a trip in a hot air balloon or hire a boat and go out on Lake Cauma for a spot of fishing. Situated in the middle of Graubünden is the charming and relaxing ski resort of Arosa in the Schanfigger Valley. A good location for skiing, there is also plenty to do in the summer. Head into the mountains on foot or by bike, enjoy the fresh air and savour the unspoiled environment.

Davos is perhaps the best skiing location in the country with its world-renowned Parsenn-Weissfluh area of pistes. In winter, have a go at tobogganing or take in a game of ice hockey. Davos is also famous as a health resort. Take a relaxing soak in the healing waters of one of the thermal spas or have a dip in the lake. St Moritz in the Engadine Valley is a must for those who want to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. A whole range of winter and summer sports is on offer as well as health treatments. There is a host of attractive little towns to explore in the Engadine valley. Head to the little village of Zendez and enter the 169² kilometre Swiss National Park. In a beautiful environment of woodland and mountains, try and spot some of the Swiss wildlife on show: chamois, ibexes, marmots.
